At Mooski games, we decided to focus on Unity as our game development platform because we had a good understanding of C# and that we can develop once and deployed anywhere. There are other game development platforms available like Unreal Engine that we have used. However, in this article, I will focus on Unity as I believe it is the best entry point to get into the game industry.

Why Unity for game development

Early in our game development journey, we found that Unity provided us with the best foundation to build whatever type of game we wanted. Other options didn’t give us the flexibility and capabilities that we wanted.

The two main reasons we choose Unity are:

  • Mobile Games — We focus on developing mobile games, and Unity is undoubtedly the better option for this targeted hardware platform.
  • Small Indie Company — We are a small team, and Unity provides excellent assets to use in our development cycle.

How to install Unity

If you are interested in giving Unity a go, they provide excellent learning resources and installing Unity is not tricky. Head over to Unity.com and click on the “Get Started” button. You will be directed to the Unity Store page.

Ensure you select the Individual tab and sign up for a Free Personal account.

Select “Start Here” to download Unity Hub, which will allow up to manage your projects and Unity versions. Agree to the terms of the Free personal account to continue the download.

Install Unity Hub, once downloaded.

Select the Install menu on the left and add an installation of Unity to your computer. Choose the version and modules you need for your project and agree to the End User License Agreement (EULA). See below

You are now ready to go with building your games with Unity. Good luck, and we look forward to seeing your creations.

NOTE — LTS versions — We highly recommend that you download and develop in LTS (Long Term Support) versions as these provide stable foundations for projects. Once you have selected a version, complete the development in that version.
